I live in Massachusetts, and I applied early action to a college in California. I haven't visited it yet, but I will if I get accepted. What is it like going to school so far from home? How extreme is the difference between California and Massachusetts?

I think that the difference would be half of the experience, and you would learn so much. If it is a hassle for you to get across the country, you may not want to. Visit!!
