What are the chances of me (NYC) getting into a college in California?
My friend told me that there's a lesser chance of me getting into a college in another state. I want to go to Scripps College in California and I want to know if I still have a good chance of getting in.

Living in the same state that you want to go to college in definitely improves your chances; however, as long as you have good grades, extracurricular activities, and strong SAT scores, you still have a good chance!

Actually being from a different state can actually improve you chances in some cases. All colleges want a diverse student body. Take me for example. I'm from Massachusetts which has a lot of great schools. While a lot of these schools have a high percentage of students from New England, they still want the diversity. So while it may not matter too much, say if I was applying to Boston University, I may have a slightly higher chance at getting in if I was from Arizona than if I was from Massachusetts since there are already so many people from Massachusetts already applying. But really, it doesn't matter that much. If you have the grades, they'll want you and it won't matter if you are from New York or California. In fact, if it was down to you and someone from California with lower grades, they would pick you most likely. Does that make sense? What I'm trying to say is that schools want diversity and the school will get a lot of applicants from it's own state or surrounding ones, so it is usually better to be from a different state since you'll help diversify the campus. At the same time, it really does just come down to grades, and your application, although where you from may play some small part, it isn't the biggest deciding factor.

Scripps is a private college and state residency is not an admission factor. Although geographical residence is considered, that is not the same as in state residency. In the context of private colleges it usually means that the college wants a geographically diverse student body and possibly that it reserves a few spaces in the class for students who will commute from home.
